Pakistani Startup DoctHERS wins Global Goals Award for improving Women’s Lives residing in Impoverished Areas
A Pakistani based social organization, DoctHERS was rewarded with the “The Campaigner Award” in the first Global Goals Award ceremony, which was held on 20 September, 2016 in New York. This award ceremony was organized by Project Everyone, Unilever and UNICEF.
DoctHERS provides the platform for breaking all socio-cultural barriers of female doctors. It matches trained junior female doctors in Pakistan with females residing in impoverished areas via tele-medicine. It reaches to helpless females with necessary health care in Pakistan. It also provides employment opportunities for qualified female doctors.
Inspiration of Co-Founders
The two Co-Founders of DoctHERS, Dr. Sara Saeed Khurram and Dr. Iffat Zafar, were motivated to establish with the aim to empower women against cultural and social barriers that restrict them to practice medicine after marriage.
Sara Saeed said, “ My inspiration was that I was terminated from my job as I was expecting a baby. This is just one of the problems that female doctors are facing in Pakistan. My colleague was in a corporate office. She was also a doctor but she had to leave her job because she conceived the baby and she was unable to work longer hours and there was no part time job option for her.”
- Get female doctors on board who generally don’t practice due to social pressure or family constraints.
- Conduct a survey at corporations and underprivileged areas to understand their health care solutions.
- Make a list of all the prominent and recurring medical issue.
- Set up the online video consultation system and hire a nurse to operate the system, she also handles the referral system if necessary.
- Set up a clinic in the underprivileged area or the corporations which acts as a platform for medical health care.
- The video consultation system and referral system provide medical health care to those underprivileged areas or the corporations filling the space created by non availability of doctors.

Providing Services through Technology
DoctHERs runs three clinics all over the Pakistan in both rural and urban areas. It is facing the problem of internet connectivity in rural areas. According to Sara, the organization is dealing with the electricity shortfall with generators and UPS in rural areas. Some connectivity providers are also helping to reduce the internet issue in rural areas. Recently, the organization launched a tele-clinic in Mansehra. Mostly females from surrounding rural areas visited the clinic.
About Global Goals Award
The Global Goal Awards are part of continuing efforts to public support on the basis of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – a set of goals generally adopted by every country in the world to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030.
The awards were created by UNICEF with the 17 SDG advocates forming the official judging panel.
