Twitter Rolls out new Feature to Tackle Online Abuse and Crappy Hashtags
Twitter officially announced on Tuesday that it was rolling out a long-overdue tool that will enable the users to filter out and remove the harassment and abusive content on its social media messaging platform.
The ‘Muted Words’ feature will now allow the Twitter users to filter out potential annoying content that panics the users to use its messaging service. This time, the tool has been made to counteract specifically in terms of cyberbullying or online harassment.
“The amount of cyberbullying, racism, abuse and harassment we’ve noticed across the internet has risen sharply over the social media in the past couple of years,” Twitter said in a statement.
This new tool to report offensive content is introduced after offensive attacks by Twitter users over hotly contested US elections, and users are more likely to leave social media network due to poised cyberbullying unless an appropriate action is taken to cover the loss. Moreover, users are interacting with online abuse that is more likely to be felt in notifications where such irrelevant content appears as Twitter users are not willing to seek. Twitter has made a specific tool to control what you see on your timeline by (block, unfollow, mute), Twitter has aimed to expand mute to other parts of the social media as well, specifically in the notifications. The company also lets the users report online harassment and hateful tweets.
Twitter users on the basis of religion, race, gender, age, disability, ethnicity, political likings, or disease are seen to be directly targeted by cyberbullying.
To mute such inappropriate words, hashtags or phrases, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Notifications’ > newly introduced ‘Muted Words’.
What are ‘Mute Words’?
Mute Words provide you with an ability to mute specific phrases, hashtags, words, usernames or emoji’s, so you won’t be able to see any new irrelevant notifications for any Tweets that contain abusive content.
- To mute specific irrelevant words, Go to Notifications > Settings.
- Next Step, Tap on Muted Words to add certain phrases or words.
- Then, add inappropriate words and you won’t be getting them in your notifications.
To report an offensive tweet to the company, simply tap the chevron menu, and tap ‘Report Tweet’. From there, you will be guided more about reporting the feature.
Mute away the unwanted words, tweets, hashtags and whatsoever is irrelevant to you as Twitter has finally taken a stance against a wide number of hateful tweeters on their network.
